Great Design Flexibility
Can we change or add to the structure in the future?
Yes. The Sprung structure is a prefabricated, modular building design, which allows for easy expansion, or reduction, in the future.
Can it be attached to an existing building?
Yes. The Sprung structure can easily be attached to an existing building through our sealed connecting corridor system, available in widths of 3.05m, 4.35m or 5.84m. The structure can also be butted up directly to a conventional building.
How easy is it to relocate a Sprung structure?
One of the unique characteristics of the Sprung structure is that it can be dismantled, reconfigured and re-erected.
This flexibility is an advantage where the structure is located on leased land or land vulnerable to sea level rise in 30+ years. This means your organisation retains the vast majority of the value of the building compared to a traditional building.
Good Energy Efficiency
Can it be air-conditioned or heated?
Yes. Sprung offers a truly effective building solution that keeps cool in the summer and warm in the winter with low energy use. The key is the insulation system, using 200mm or 230mm R4.4 and R5.3 Johns Manville fiberglass blanket insulation finished with an attractive tensioned interior finishing membrane. Air conditioning or other mechanical ventilation can be easily added to the structure.
High Durability in NZ Conditons
Sprung tensioned membrane structures endure. By design, the fabric structure sheds snow, withstands hurricane force winds and shows a remarkable resistance to earthquakes.
Sprung structures are engineered to last. Their unique shape and sophisticated tension system, made up of individual 4.5m membrane sections tensioned both vertically and horizontally, make them more durable in extreme conditions — be it a frozen ice field or an active war zone.
The sophisticated patented tensioning system combined with Sprung's superior quality membranes and extruded aluminum substructure ensures a durable finished product that dramatically outperforms any product of its type in the world. Some examples are listed below.
Cold - Arctic Watch, the world’s most northerly lodge, is located 80 miles south of the magnetic North Pole.
Wind - The Missile Defense System integrated architecture at Fluor Alaska Inc., located in Shemya, Alaska, is engineered to withstand wind loads of 200 kmph. Warwick Le Lagon Resort & Spa was used as a storm shelter on March 13, 2015, during Cyclone Pam, a category 5 cyclone, with 300 kmph winds hitting side on to the Sprung Conventions Centre structure being used for shelter.
Snow - The Kirkwood Mountain Resort in Lake Tahoe, California, has set a world record for snowfall in a single week at 9.7 feet in February 2011.
Heat - Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld addressed troops in a Sprung structure in the hot Kuwait desert.
Earthquake -
The 2010 Haiti earthquake measured a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake, with an epicenter near the town of Léogâne, approximately 25 km (16 miles) west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital. The earthquake occurred at 16:53 local time (21:53 UTC) on Tuesday, 12 January 2010. During the earthquake many of the government offices were destroyed.
Sprung supplied three fully insulated 12m x 36m Sprung structures that were shipped from inventory within 3 days from order. Sprung structures are designed and engineered to withstand hurricane force winds which was a major factor in selecting Sprung as the product of choice
Great Acoustic Properties
How are the acoustics?
Sprung structures have been used successfully on hundreds of acoustically sensitive applications. The curved profile of the structure creates an interior free from conventional flat walls and corners. The soft interior fabric walls effectively absorb sound, resulting in outstanding acoustic properties.
Cheaper to Build (NZ build cost comparison)
Dealing Direct – No Middle Man
You will deal direct with Sprung, no others are in the distribution chain adding cost. AFNZ is there to assist you with our local knowledge to make it a smoother journey.
Are engineering costs included?
Yes. You do not need to budget any extra for engineering of the structure itself, since an engineered drawing is included in the price of your Sprung structure. You will need to obtain the usual planning and building consents as with any new building and to deal with site specific issues.
Could we build a conventional metal building cheaper?
You probably can but it is very unlikely that you could find a more cost-effective use of your building budget because of the added value offered by Sprung structures.
A quote can usually be provided within 10 working days of receiving your request
Shorter Build Time
How fast can a Sprung structure be erected?
We inventory up to 200,000 square metres of product for immediate delivery. Structures can be erected at a rate of up to 95 square metres per day for insulated structures, and 185 square metres per day for non-insulated structures. These rates can be doubled or tripled with additional labour.
The entire project takes a fraction of the time compared to conventional construction alternatives.
Case Studies
High Durability in NZ Conditions
Case 1.
Arctic Watch (Office1)
Since 1992, Arctic Watch Wilderness Lodge (arcticwatch.ca) has been located 80 miles south of the Magnetic North Pole on Somerset Island. These Sprung structures provide sleeping and recreational facilities for hundreds of visitors throughout the summer who come to the Arctic for an ultimate wild life experience. Sprung structures 12 feet by 12 feet housing units are combined with 30 foot span structures to produce an exceptional facility for this remote Arctic location.
Case 2.
Disaster Recovery - Ground Zero, NY
Shortly after the devastating events took place in New York City on September 11, 2001, Sprung was called upon by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to supply the city’s Ground Zero site with a 31,000-square-foot Sprung structure. Stationed directly on the location of Ground Zero, Sprung’s high-performance tensioned membrane structure provided a place for thousands of recovery workers to dust off, clean up and eat a hot meal.
With winter quickly approaching, the EPA looked for a structure that could be built permanently in place, and most importantly provide heat and superior climate control for all the workers inside. The structure also required adequate space and a bright, clearspan environment for recovery workers. The solution of choice was a 120' x 260' ft. Sprung structure that rose nearly 50 feet tall at its apex, and included a dynamic wash station that was visited by nearly 650,000 workers since its first month in November 2001. With workers safely sheltered from the elements, work continued 24 hours a day, seven days a week, progressing through night and day, in rain or shine.
The structure included a large area for multiple uses like food services, meal and rest areas, washing and showering facilities, a running lab, changing and training facilities, search areas and a meeting area. Speed of delivery and efficiency of construction were determining factors in selecting Sprung as the best solution for a temporary facility at Ground Zero. Sprung structures provide an innovative, cost-effective building alternative that dramatically accelerates construction timelines and provides complete flexibility for the future.
